Every coffee origin is slightly different. Governments are different, traditions are different, and resources are different. It is pretty common for global coffee production to be unilaterally stereotyped based on marketable narrative. However, since I have the opportunity to experience these differences, I want to do what I can to communicate them to fellow coffee lovers.
I knew that Ethiopia would be unlike anything I had seen anywhere else in the coffee world, and I tried to leave as many of my expectations behind as I could. I had been told it was the opposite of transparent, that there would be very little granular information to gather, and that I might leave a bit frustrated about how the ECX (Ethiopian Commodities Exchange) controls everything and makes direct relationships all but impossible. I also knew, however, that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee. The coffee varieties that grow there are as original as it gets.
