We look forward to the years when we are able to carry coffee from El Carmen Estate. Always a crowd pleaser, this lot of washed Red Bourbon follows suit with previous offerings. It is approachable, consistent, naturally sweet, and works well as filter and espresso. The Alfaro family has shown us great hospitality on multiple visits to their gorgeous farm and estate in years past. The cuppings there are always lively and the plantation-style accommodations are charming and cozy. These guys have been doing what they do for a very long time and we intend on being a part of their story for as long as we can.

The estate was founded in the middle of the 19th century when Antonio José Alfaro acquired a plot of land near the village of Ataco – meaning ‘Site of Elevated Springs’ in the indigenous Nahuatl language – where he started to produce coffee. His son, Agustin Alfaro, founder of the Salvadoran National Coffee Company, followed in his father’s footsteps and established El Carmen as one of El Salvador’s leading exporters. His efforts were continued by Antonio Alfaro, head of the third generation of this coffee family and are carried through today by Fernando Alfaro, the fourth generation of his family to farm coffee.

The Bourbon variety is believed to be a major contributor to the uniqueness of Salvadorian coffees. In spite of drastic environmental challenges in recent years that have faced these more delicate trees, El Carmen Estate is among producers in El Salvador who have triumphed through specialized pruning for shade growing. We are grateful for their commitment and we are glad to share the yield with you all.
