Aroma Del Valle or ‘Scent of the Valley’ named after the fragrance of coffee tree blossom, is an association based in the Cajamarca region of Peru. Operating in various villages in Jaén, San Ignacio and Cutervo, this particular lot is produced by 12 smallholder farmers. Each member of the association delivers their coffee to the collection point in Santa Maria Village, Ja én, where this lot is formed.
Founded by Merly Cruz Rivera and Ivan Cruz Rivera in 2015, Aroma Del Valle was created to provide much-needed support to producers, as well as increase transparency within the coffee supply chain. Today, Aroma Del Valle stands proud, able to support 317 smallholder members in their socio-economic development.
All members’ farms are located between 1,500 to 2,100 meters above sea level and average less than 3 hectares in size. Profits from coffee farming in the region are often small; however, families have created a living for themselves and their families, relying almost solely upon coffee for income. Although other produce is grown and some small livestock such as chickens or guinea pigs are raised to be sold at rural markets, coffee cultivation is often the sole means of income, with other produce reserved for personal consumption. As such, inputs are minimal – most coffee grown in the region is 100% organic, as farmers simply don't have the money to apply chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. This makes guinea pigs a useful resource, as their ‘guano’ is often used to help fertilize crops.
