Riayn lives for the small moments in life—a curiosity shared by many of us here at Cartel. She's thoughtful about the mystery of nature, the power of music and art, the importance of interpersonal connection, the capacity of human brains, the magic of food science, and the deliciousness of thoughtful food and beverages. She's our #HumansOfCartel feature this week.

What brought you to Cartel?
I have been a big fan of Cartel since I moved to Phoenix in 2012. I moved back to California 2 years ago and was very excited when my friend Casey called me to let me know about the first California location opening up close to me.

How long have you worked with Cartel?
7 months

Share a little about your perspective on Cartel's core values, your community, and the coffee industry.
I really appreciate Cartel’s emphasis on education and meaningful experiences — for baristas and customers alike. Some of my favorite moments at work are when I can connect with customers and add to their coffee knowledge. I especially love adding to my own coffee knowledge, and seeing incremental improvements in my drinks week to week. There is something very satisfying about slowly mastering a craft, and I’m happy to be in an environment that allows me to do it.

What is your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about working with coffee are the meditative and ritualistic aspects of it. I love taking the time to slow down, pay attention to details, and create a beverage without compromise.

What are your aspirations for the future?
My husband and I are getting ready to buy a small house with a few acres in the next couple years, where we aspire to build a modern homestead with a good sized art studio; complete with gardens, chickens, goats, bees, a dark room, recording booth, native desert plants, and a kick-ass kitchen.

What is your favorite beverage?
Pour overs! I am really loving everything in our new lineup, but I think the Inzá Cauca is my favorite (soooooo clean!).

Next time you're in Palm Springs, go see Riayn at Cartel, and ask her about all the curiosities of human life while she makes you a bomb cup of coffee.
