Humans of Cartel: Raechel Hurd
With perfect timing and a splash of luck, we are excited to welcome in Raechel Hurd as the supervisor of our upcoming Austin location. She's one of the most kickass #HumansOfCartel. Some of our friends in ATX may already know her, but if you don't yet, allow us to introduce her.
What are a few interesting things about you?
I am an avid rock climber! I’m also a competitive barista—I made it to the US Coffee Champs last year!
What brought you to Cartel?
Perfect timing and a splash of luck! I’ve always wanted to work for Cartel, and when they announced the opening of the Austin location, I sprinted towards the chance to work there!
What's your perspective on Cartel, your community, and the industry as a whole?
Cartel’s core values resonate with me. In particular, collaborate and kick ass. New and exciting things don’t happen because one person wills it to fruition. Cartel humans are always willing to hear you out and help you out. The Austin community is bursting with talented, dedicated people. There is always something brewing between different groups within the community and it keeps the air buzzing with energy. The coffee community in Austin is saturated with talented professionals. We are supportive of one another even though we fake trash talk at the monthly latte art competitions. My closest friends are in this community, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
What is your favorite thing about your job?
Working with like-minded humans who push themselves to do better and be better humans every day.
What are your aspirations for the future?
I would love to take top 3 in the US Barista Championship one day. I would also love to try roasting, it’s an aspect of specialty coffee I haven’t explored and it would help me understand what goes on behind the espresso machine on a deeper level.
What is your favorite beverage?
Pour-over till I die. Non-coffee: genmaicha tea!
Don't forget to say hi to Raechel and the rest of the new ATX Cartel team during our grand opening on July 19th, 2019.
