Culpan is a #carteldirectsource coffee and a truly romantic Guatemalan coffee estate. Situated north of Lake Atitlan, in the foothills of the Santiaguito volcano, it has been meticulously run by the celebrated Toledo family for 5 generations. At elevations between 1200 and 1500 meters above sea level, Culpan produces washed Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuaí varieties. We taste stone fruit and cocoa with a medium body.
Juan Diego, grandson of the late Roberto Toledo, oversees most of the production today. He stays deeply rooted in the traditions of his grandfather, while also seeking out ways to modernize. Juan also shares a connection with Cartel on a personal level, as he received his graduate degree from ASU right around the corner from our roastery in Tempe, AZ! Read more about Juan Diego here.
Maravilla comes from a small farm from Huehuetenango, Guatemala. It's run by its owner, Mauricio Rosales Vázquez. It produces washed Bourbon and Caturra varieties grown between 1646 and 1798 meters above sea level.
In 1997, Mauricio and his father, Guillermo, purchased the farm with a dream to maximize its quality potential. Guillermo passed away in 2005 at age 82, but the dream stayed alive in Mauricio, who saw Maravilla place 9th in Guatemala’s Cup of Excellence program in 2014.
We are proud to feature this beautiful example of the Huehuetenango region (often abbreviated Huehue) at Cartel. We taste Granny Smith apple, cane sugar, and cinnamon.
